East Belfast Coarse Angling Club

2005 Ulster Coarse Fishing Federation Schools Coarse Angling Competition.

This annual event, organised by the Ulster Coarse Fishing Federation, sponsored by Shakespeare tackle and assisted by the Dept. of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Irish Angling Services and Magherafelt District Council was held on the Lower River Bann at Magherafelt District Council's coarse angling facility near Portglenone on the 8th October. Conditions on the day were excellent with only a single shower getting in the way. A total of 25 teams of four, from schools all over Northern Ireland, entered the competition and gave it their best shot.
A panel of UCFF coaches and officials were on the bankside to help the less experienced along and this together with ample supplies of feeders, hooks and bit and pieces supplied by Shakespeare tackle ensured that most of the competitors caught fish. Although weights were low, roach, gudgeon, perch and a couple of decent bream were weighed in and hopefully catching a fish or two might release the angling bug in a few more juniors. At the presentation after the match, held in St. Mary's College, Clady and hosted by Magherafelt District Council the winners received tackle prizes, tackle vouchers, medals and trophies totalling over £1,000

1st team Portora Royal School, Enniskillen - Each competitor received a Shakespeare rod - a Gold medal and a tackle voucher valued at £30. The school received a silver plate and Bann Systems Ltd. perpetual cup.

3rd team Lurgan College, - Each competitor received a Shakespeare carry-all, a Bronze medal and a tackle voucher valued at £15.

Stop the Slaughter NOW!

I am mailing you to ask you if you could inform people who you meet fishing that there is a group that has come together to see if there is any way that the some laws can be changed within the Irish Fisheries act that would outlaw the killing of coarse fish. As you know there has been a big increase in illegal practices being used to plunder stocks of fish from venues that have a very small stock in the first place.

So, a group of guys made up from a few different angling backgrounds have come together to group our ideas and plan a strategy that may lead in the changes being made. Through the website www.fishingtalkireland.com initially and then through some UK based sites such as Maggotdrowning, Fishingmagic and Total-Fishing we have asked users/anglers to sign an online petition that we plan to present to the Ministers (Noel Dempsey and Pat Gallagher) along with some letters and photographic media that has been given to us, we actually have a picture of nets that were taken from Muckno that were quite sickening.

The site where we have the online petition can be found at here - http://www.petitiononline.com/22jun05/petition.html

It has so far been remarkable with the amount of signatures we have had, close on 200 in just 36 hours of the actual site being live.

EBCAC Winter League Round-up

Paul McMullan is this year's EBCAC Winter League Winner after an exciting run-in which saw his consistancy rewarded when he managed to hold of the challenges of Keith Cole and Jim Rush.

Results Final Table

Raymond McAleese done enough to take this year's Knock-Out Trophy by trouncing Alan Sharkey in the Final. A fully deserved victory for Mr McAleese after he came through some tough matches, eliminating some fine angler's along the way, as opposed to the path ti the Final obtained by his rival Alan "bye" Sharkey. ;-))

Just good old fashioned manners!

I was reading through some old literature about Coarse Fishing in Northern Ireland when I came across this little snippet that applies every bit as much today as it did in 1968 when the booklet was produced. Sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same.....

Thoughts about good manners

"Angler's as a group tend to be among the best behaved of visitors to the countryside. They know that gates should be left closed; that tins and botles are always unsightly and can be dangerous to farm animals; that a clean river is better for fishing. They therefore consider the well being of the countryside and its inhabitants while they enjoy their sport. Nevertheless, good manners are one of the few things which can never be overdone. The pressure on our countryside is increasing as more and more people from the towns turn to it for recreation. This movement will be better, and freer, and more enjoyable if it takes place with the willing agreement of farmers, landowners and country people generally. It never does any harm to say PLEASE and THANK YOU."

So there you are always ask permission, have respect for the countryside and TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME! Sounds like good advice to me.
